About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient medical practice involving the use of thin, sterile and disposable needles inserted into the skin at specific points on the body to relieve pain and treat diseases. It is a 2,000-year-old therapeutic treatment recognized by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO). It is effective in the treatment of virtually any form of medical condition.
Acupuncture promotes natural healing and circulation. It can enhance recuperative power and immunity, support physical and emotional health, and improve overall daily functioning and well-being. It is a safe, painless way to treat a wide variety of medical problems. The classical view is that acupuncture does this by promoting the flow of the body’s Qi (sometimes spelled “Chi” and pronounced “chee.”) At the core of this ancient Eastern practice is the meridian philosophy which maintains that a person’s health is influenced by the balance and flow of Qi through the body’s meridians, or channels. Whenever we experience physical or emotional trauma, stress, or injury, the movement of Qi is restricted through the meridians. The balance of Qi is also affected by lack of exercise, poor diet, emotional difficulties and overexertion.
There are a number modern scientific explanations that theorize needling acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system. Recent research using fMRI’s shows that needling certain acupuncture points stimulates certain parts of the brain which in turn effect the other regulating systems of the body
Regardless of reason why acupuncture works, millions of people all over the world use this gentle and safe method to improve and maintain their health and wellbeing.
